[Translation 16-05-13] “Strategy” is to understand the coherence of things to such an extend that a company can make the right choices on precisely those decisions that will have effects that will influence the company and its stakeholders for a long time. The strategist must in my opinion understand the mechanisms at work in its markets and within the company. The strategist needs to focus on mechanisms that determine which options and limitations the company has, and will have in the future. A deep understanding of these mechanisms will be material to create successful strategies, but also to identify what routes should not be taken.

Every choice made by management today determines the (im)possibilities of the company they are responsible for in the future. Many of these choices have little effects and will – eventually – be absorbed by other effects or are reversible like little ripples in a pond. But some of today’s choices will have the potential to be determinative for all choices from now on until 5 or more years. These choices are often less obvious or visible than assumed and part of the regular agenda.

Strategy is not about describing how the world will look like in 5 or even 10 years from now. Strategy is not working your way towards a point on the horizon either. Strategy is about a deep understanding of the matters involved at this moment in time.

[Update 16-05-2013] Larry Page at the Google I/O conference 2013 takes this view to the extreme (via Gizmodo):

“If you’re going to make a smartphone for a dollar, like one dollar, that’s almost impossible,” … “But if you took a longer view, like 50 years, you’d change how you look at your investments, and find a way to make money. You just need a deep understanding of what you’re doing.”

NB In other posts I stipulated this about strategy:
