What I find interesting at a meta-level is the observation that we have trouble observing complex relationships, especially if there is also a time delay involved. We construct our realities on assumptions of our “own truths” without realizing that we are usually just guessing. We do this however so convincingly to ourselves and others that we really believe that these ideas and explanation of our reality are the right ones and true.
With the advent of Big data, we will see that our human intuition and our assumptions about matters are very often just wrong. Big data to the rescue?
by using algebraic topology Ayasdi has managed to totally remove the human element that goes into data mining — and, as such, all the human bias that goes with it. Instead of waiting to be asked a question or be directed to specific existing data links, the system will — undirected — deliver patterns a human controller might not have thought to look for.
The question this raises is whether man is not increasingly redundant in a sense in establishing relationships that will then form the basis for policy making, both within companies but also for political decision-making.
Wat ik op meta niveau interessant vind is de constatering dat we met elkaar moeite hebben complexere verbanden waar te nemen, zeker als daar ook nog een tijdsvertraging inzit. We construeren hele werkelijkheden op aannames van “eigen waarheden” zonder te beseffen dat we meestal maar een beetje zitten te gissen. We doen dit echter zo overtuigend naar ons zelf en anderen dat we werkelijk geloven dat juist de eigen ideeën en verklaring van onze werkelijkheid de juiste zijn.
Met de komst van grote hoeveelheden ontsluitbare data zullen we in toenemende mate gaan zien dat onze menselijke intuïtie en onze aannames over zaken gewoon weg niet kloppen. Big data to the rescue?

De vraag die dit opwerpt is of de mens in zekere zin niet overbodig wordt bij het vaststellen van verbanden die vervolgens in toenemende mate het uitgangspunt gaan vormen voor beleid; zowel binnen bedrijven maar ook voor politieke besluitvorming.
