This is my favourite Einstein quote, by far. A regular professional challenge encountered by me is to suggest a solution to the customer that meets the statement of Einstein while still being too complex for the client. Most of my time I am working to fill this gap and make a translation that will preserve at least the core of the solution. Sometimes I am told that if I can not put it in simpler wordings than I am to make the translation. This is not meant as a value judgement. “We would like to have Big Bird from Sesame-street to understand it”. It should be reduced to a one-liner, or a few (preferably fashion) platitudes whose inherent logic and coherence is completely evident, especially for the person that the complexities of the present issue is not (able) to see. It must appeal to “common sense”. But not everything can be reduced to common sense …

Dit is mijn favoriete Einstein quote, by far. Een regelmatig terugkerende professionele uitdagingen is om naar de klant een oplossing te suggereren die voldoet aan de uitspraak van Einstein terwijl dat nog te complex is voor de opdrachtgever om goed te kunnen overzien. Het meeste tijd ben ik bezig om de deze vertaalslag te maken. Het wordt me wel eens voorgehouden dat als ik het niet simpeler kan maken dat IK dan de gene ben die die vertaalslag moet maken. Feitelijk is dat ook zo, maar het wordt niet feitelijk bedoeld maar als een waardeoordeel. “We willen het graag in Jip-en-Janneke-Taal”. Het moet teruggebracht kunnen worden tot een oneliner, of een paar (liefst modieuze) platitudes waarvan de inherente logica en samenhang evident is, juist voor de gene die de complexiteiten van het voorliggende vraagstuk niet (kunnen) overzien. Het moet appelleren aan “common sense”. Maar niet alles is terug te brengen tot common sense…
