How often can you hear someone make a statement that begins with “You could say that….”? Journalists are often guilty of this practice, but also politicians, managers and many others. They are sincerely convinced about their own logic and the simplicity of the fore laying issues or conclusion. But almost always, things are not so obvious and much (much) more complex than it appears at first glance. In this time when every opinion is worth as much as an other, in times of fact-free politics also, in which science is distrusted and populism reigns supreme, anyone can claim what he wants and then push in the defense the one who has struggled with the matter and has knowledge – like my father always used to say – with experience and knowledge.
But every time I hear this intro I find the one that says it really has no idea what he is talking about. To state it less diplomatically:

Hoe vaak hoor je iemand niet een stelling poneren die begint met “Je zou zeggen dat….”? Journalisten maken zich hier vaak schuldig aan, maar ook politici, managers en vele anderen. Ze denken daarbij oprecht dat in hun eigen logica het allemaal toch zo eenvoudig is. Maar bijna altijd zijn de zaken helemaal niet zo evident en veel (heel veel) complexer dan op het eerste gezicht lijkt. In deze tijd waarin elke mening evenveel waard zou zijn; van fact free politics ook; waarin wetenschap wordt gewantrouwd en populisme hoogtij viert, kan iedereen beweren wat hij wil en vervolgens de gene die kennis heeft, geworsteld heeft met de materie – zoals mijn vader dat altijd zo krachtig placht te zeggen -, die ervaring heeft in de verdediging dringen.
Maar elke keer als ik deze aanhef hoor merk ik dat de gene die het zegt werkelijk geen benul heeft waar die het over heeft. Om het minder diplomatiek te stellen:
“Je zou zeggen dat…” zegt niets over het gestelde maar alles over het onbenul van de steller!
